Capt.L.L.Benke

I recently acquired a 1914 Star trio with clasp, in a box by Spink, named to Capt.L.L.Benke.(Lieut on star)

The paperwork which accompanied the group indicated that Lionel Benke was born in 1891; was serving as a second lieutenant on the Supp. List in 1913; was mobilized on 5 Aug.,1914, and was attached to the 2nd Bn. of the East Lancs. Regt.

He was slightly wounded on 3 Dec.,1914, being sent back to England and having surgery on his left hand on 4 Jan.,1915. He returned to France but in August,1915 was back in England again, this time with a duodenal ulcer.

When I received the group, there was a MID device on the Victory Medal. Do any of the Pals have access to MID listings? I did a quick search of the London Gazette online, and found mention of Benke's promotion to captain, but no MID. Is this a case of a self-awarded mention?
