InkyBill Posted 11 October , 2003 Share Posted 11 October , 2003 Hi Pals Help Required yet again!! I am reserching the 1st Essex and their attack at Monchy-le-Preux on 14th April 1917. According to the history of the battalion it was split into companies 'W' 'X' 'Y' and 'Z' instead of the traditional 'A' 'B' 'C' and 'D' why is this ? My theory is it was to avoid confusion with the its neigbouring battalion in this case the 1st Royal Newfoundland Reg whose companies were letered A-D. What adds to the confusion is that the particular 1st Essex man i'm reserching killed on this date is listed by the CWGC as being attached to 'D' Coy. Any Ideas Marc
