Ciaran Byrne Posted 14 October , 2003 Share Posted 14 October , 2003 After reading Max Aurther's book "Forgotten Voices" two units were mentioned that I had never heard of - The Bankers Battalion & The Lewisham Gunners. Can anybody give me any info on these units?
Staffsyeoman Posted 15 October , 2003 Share Posted 15 October , 2003 The Lewisham Gunners were the 97th (Howitzer) Battery of the 4th London (Howitzer) Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Their drill hall was at Ennersdale Road, Hither Green, London SE13. They endured in various forms (including a stint as an Airborne unit) until the Carver Axe of 1967. All that's left now on the site is an ACF hut - and I should know, I used to command the Army Cadet Gunner Battery based there! There is a small monograph - hard to find - called 'The Lewisham Gunners' which tells their story.
