15th Royal Irish Rifles gassed

On 6 September 1917, Lt-Col Smythe DSO, OC 15th Royal Irish Rifles, together with another 6 officers, 21 OR and the attached Chaplain, were all gassed and evacuated. The incident is not mentioned in the Divisional history, nor is the battalion war diary very revealing. For the day, it just lists those who were gassed and doesn't explain the circumstances. Does anyone have any other information as to exactly what happened?

(The battalion was in the Salient)
