David_Bluestein Posted 23 October , 2003 Share Posted 23 October , 2003 Could some one with the proper resources be kind enough to check and see if the below mentioned soldier is listed as a POW. Much thanks in advance. David 240204 Drummer W.W. Amis 1st/5th Norfolk Regt. Killed (or Died Of wounds?) August 18, 1918. Buried at Baghdad War Cemetery. (This is the only information I have on him). Guest Pete Wood Posted 23 October , 2003 Share Posted 23 October , 2003 David, I hadn't realised you didn't know his name. Sorry. William Walter Amis Born and enlisted in Cromer, Norfolk. He does not appear in the 1901 census, so at the time of his death that would make him 17 years or younger.....(??!!)
MartinWills Posted 23 October , 2003 Share Posted 23 October , 2003 Name: AMIS Initials: W W Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Drummer Regiment: Norfolk Regiment Unit Text: 1st/5th Bn. Date of Death: 18/08/1918 Service No: 240204 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: XXI. U. 9. Cemetery: BAGHDAD (NORTH GATE) WAR CEMETERY Checking on the mother site the 1/5ths moved on to serve in Palestine after their infamous sojourn at Gallipoli. In either case prisoners of war would have been taken by the Turks. The fate of Turkish prisoners of war is not well documented but his burial at Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery would suggest that he had died as a PoW in one of the camps such as Yozgad or one of several in the Taurus mountains where PoW labour was used to build the railway and specifically the tunnels through the Taurus Mountains. By the way his absence from the 1901 census only goes to show that he was not recorded, or not recorded or transcribed under his CWGC name. It is in fact far too common that an individual cannot be found on the census. Hope this helps. Martin
David_Bluestein Posted 23 October , 2003 Author Share Posted 23 October , 2003 Well you have all managed to peek my interest in Drummer Amis. Very anxious to hear if he shows up as a POW? Thanks for all the input so far. David
