Matt Dixon Posted 25 October , 2003 Share Posted 25 October , 2003 Can anyone tell me who the first officer from the Lancers regiments was, to be killed on the retreat from Mons? My Great Uncle WEG Thompson was in the 9th Lancers and died of wounds received on the retreat from Mons. The earliest officer casualty I know of was Captain JE Knowles of the Middlesex Regt, 14th August 1914 but was he the earliest officer casualty, or did this distinction belong to one of the cavalry regiments? Terry Denham Posted 25 October , 2003 Share Posted 25 October , 2003 Matt See this earlier thread on the subject of earliest men killed. http://www.1914-1918.org/forum/index.php?s...=first+casualty Capt Knowles actually died on 23.08.14 and the previous thread quotes a chap called Thompson as the first British officer to die (as opposed to being wounded). Matt Dixon Posted 25 October , 2003 Author Share Posted 25 October , 2003 Thanks I have had a good look at the link you provided. I have to confess to a typo regarding Knowles, as I actually have the photo of his headstone by me when I typed the first message! I have a letter from Great Uncle just before he died and there is some mention of Officer casualties...I will have a look and then check on the CWGC website to see if this can shed any light.
