I was recently given a copy of my grandfathers medal entitlement record. His name was Henry (Harry) Gilbody and he was a sapper in the Royal Engineers. There were 2 Regiment numbers-1206 and 440172. Then it has

Medal Roll Page

Victory RE/101B167 39386

British - do- -do-

15 Star RE/21B 5414

Theatre of War first served in 3

Date of entry there in 26.9.14

Can someone please explain what it all means.

Sandra.

Sandra,

Your grandfather was entitled to a 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory medal. They would be inscribed with the number 1206. The other number was given to him when certein units were renumbered in 1916.

He went overseas 26 September 1914, and '3' stands for Egypt.

The numbers and letters after the medal types are references for medal rolls. Unfortunately the rolls, in this case (REs) will not give you unit information. You could however work this out from the embarkation records in WO 25.

It was one of a block of numbers allocated to 428 Field Company RE. I have the unit history for all of the East Lancs Divisional Engineers.
