Wilfred Ewart Scots Guard

There must be thousands of stories like his. He was an officer with the Scots Guards who arrived on the western front early in 1915 and lived through the war. Like so many who had long service there he was out of action a lot.

He was in Mexico writing in 1923 when he was killed by a stray bullet. A hell of a note, a stray gets him after thousands missed in action.

His book, Scots Guard is in inexpensive paperback reprint, good book.

There is also a very good biography/memoir of him which was published in the 30s - much rarer than his own book, but worth looking out for. I can post further details if of interest.

Paul (G),

I seem to recall that it was a stray bullet at a time of New Years Celebrations or similar - a time when numerous firearms were discharged into the air and no-one was warned to take cover. A mishap, but a predictable one in the circumstances.

Way of Revelation is a fine read, by the way.

Martin

The book I mentioned is:

Stephen Graham Life And Last Words of Wilfrid Ewart (Putnams 1924)

Graham had also served in the Scots Guards and wrote his own book on WW1.
