paul guthrie Posted 3 November , 2003 Share Posted 3 November , 2003 There is a picture of him in A Serious Disapointment, a book about Aubers Ridge. He's 6' 11", may be LT Hay instead. I have seen another of him somewhere next to a bantam. He survived the war despite being quite a target. Know anything about him? Thanks.
charlesmessenger Posted 4 November , 2003 Share Posted 4 November , 2003 Paul It could be Capt Lindsay Fitzgerald Hay of the Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), who was commissioned into the Regiment on 26 Aug 14. He was wounded twice during the war, was mentioned in despatches on 28 Nov 17 and was awarded the 1914-15 Star. Charles M
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 4 November , 2003 Share Posted 4 November , 2003 Were there not regulations concerning such tall men going in to the trenches? I remember George Coppard talikng about this in his book where the officer concerned was picked off by a sniper because he forgot to duck his head. paul guthrie Posted 4 November , 2003 Author Share Posted 4 November , 2003 Charles that very likely is the man, took a look and it is LT not FT and time fits too with 14 15 Star. Actually it says he was 6'11" 1/2. Surely someone else has seen the picture of him next to a Bantam, I think caption said Black Watch and tallest man in the army. Of course it's much easier to remember obscure GW facts than where you read them!
