Kate Wills Posted 3 November , 2003 Share Posted 3 November , 2003 I am trying to track down as much information as possible on an officer called L (can't make his christian name from his writing) McNEILL-HEWITT, who served in Egypt and Salonika with the ASC and RAF. I have failed miserably to call up his details on the 1881 and 1901 census, and London Gazette, and the 1901 website says something like hypenated names are a double-barrelled pain! So if computer systems are befuddled what hope is there for me? Any thoughts?

Guest Pete Wood Posted 4 November , 2003 Share Posted 4 November , 2003 Kate, Look also here on the Gazette http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/archiveVi...&selHonourType= This names your man, I believe, using the search term McN. Hewitt
Kate Wills Posted 5 November , 2003 Author Share Posted 5 November , 2003 RTea, You are a real gent. I had located his PROCAT entry, but the London Gazette had me flummoxed. You obviously have the knack. In the meantime I have discovered that his name is not hyphenated anyway, unlike his entry in the Cambridge University War List, so my efforts really were in vain. Thankyou very much for your time and trouble. Kate
