Chris_B Posted 8 November , 2003 Share Posted 8 November , 2003 Just joined forum and need help with any info about circumstances of the death of my Grandfather's cousin Samuel George Burge. Someone was kind enough to look up his entry in "Soldiers Who Died CD" so I know this much: "Samuel is recorded as being KILLED IN ACTION 08/05/15, along with 38 other men from the 2nd Battalion.......most of whom enlisted or lived in Surrey, Middlesex. No Officers from the 2nd are recorded as dying that day. Samuel has no known grave and is commemorated on The Menin Gate Memorial in Belgium. A soldier named Harry Burgess who obviously enlisted at the same time as Samuel (Service no. 1739) and was killed with Samuel, is buried at NEW IRISH FARM CEMETERY & another named James NOEL (service no. 1738) like Samuel, has no known grave and is also commemorated on The Menin Gate. Of the 38 killed that day, some are buried, the majority have no known grave The Cemetery where Burgess is buried was filled AFTER the Armistice, when soldiers remains were retreived from the battlefields. At the time of Samuel's death, the 28th Division were engaged in The Battle of Frezenburg - 8th - 13th May 1915." Any new information would be much appreciated. Thanks, Chris.
