Tom Morgan Posted 10 November , 2003 Share Posted 10 November , 2003 Can anyone tell me whether there was any significant action involving 222 Bde. RFA early July, 1916? I'm looking for details to explain what might have happened to a Gunner killed on that day. (This theatre of war is just a little out of my sphere!) Glosters Posted 10 November , 2003 Share Posted 10 November , 2003 From 'Official History of the War. Mesopotamia Campaign 1914-18, vol. II' July 1916: "222nd Brigade, R.F.A. (formerly 1/3rd Home Counties Brigade), organised in three 4-gun 18-pounder batteries, had replaced the 1/1st Home Counties Brigade, withdrawn for rearmament to India." Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force, July 1916 Tigris Line of Communications Amara: C/222nd Battery, R.F.A. "During July the situation on the Tigris front remained generally unchanged..." Euphrates Line Nasiriya: B/222nd Battery, R.F.A. "During the four hot months, May to August, the British force at Nasiriya and on the Euphrates experienced on the whole a quiet and uneventful time." Tom Morgan Posted 10 November , 2003 Author Share Posted 10 November , 2003 Thanks, Steve. Do you know what the "B" and "C" mean in front of the "222"? Are they Battery numbers? If so, can you see what "A" Battery was doing? Tom
Glosters Posted 11 November , 2003 Share Posted 11 November , 2003 Sorry, forgot to list them: HQ and A Battery, 222nd Brigade, RFA were at Basra in July 1916. Basra was GHQ. Again no actions recorded in July 1916. Steve
