Simon R Posted 10 November , 2003 Share Posted 10 November , 2003 Dear All, Can anyone tell me who a colonel in the 1st Wilts. involved in the attack on Hindenburg Trench on 5th July 1916 would be? I have a reference to him being killed by a shell, the explosion of which knocked my signaller Eric Cowling down into a dug-out. Any ideas? Simon R Posted 11 November , 2003 Author Share Posted 11 November , 2003 [SIZE=1]]<span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>Doug, Many thanks for the reference. I think it's likely Lt. Col W.S. Brown is the man - Eric Cowling was a signaller with D battery 245 brigade RFA working on liason with infantry during the Somme, so it would make sense for him to be in proximity to the O.C. and especially the Btn. signalling officer during an attack.
