1st Wilts.

Dear All,

Can anyone tell me who a colonel in the 1st Wilts. involved in the attack on Hindenburg Trench on 5th July 1916 would be? I have a reference to him being killed by a shell, the explosion of which knocked my signaller Eric Cowling down into a dug-out.

Any ideas?

Is this your man? Lt Colonel WS Brown

1st Wilts war diary 5th July 1916

"In this bombardment 1 shell made a direct hit on the trench killing Lt Colonel WS Brown and wounding RSM Parker and 2nd Lt Stockbridge the Btn Signalling Officer"

The Diary is on line www.thewardrobe.org.uk

Many thanks for the reference.

I think it's likely Lt. Col W.S. Brown is the man - Eric Cowling was a signaller with D battery 245 brigade RFA working on liason with infantry during the Somme, so it would make sense for him to be in proximity to the O.C. and especially the Btn. signalling officer during an attack.
