Guest Pete Wood Posted 11 November , 2003 Share Posted 11 November , 2003 Walter Bertram Wood died on this day, as he would have wished - flying. Bert was the first scout in his district and formed the 3rd Grimsby Troop. He was the first Lincolnshire scout to achieve the King's Medal and went on to become Scout Master. The most highly decorated officer in the 8th Hants (Isle of Wight Rifles), Bert was accredited with 13 victories (some say 17) in 29 Squadron. Exhausted, and ill, he was sent to 44 Sqn on home defence duties. While teaching a novice aviator, Walter fell unconscious at the controls of the notoriously unforgiving Sopwith Camel. He was aged just 20. Bert, you passed away exactly 86 years ago - but you will never be forgotten. Also remembering 2Lt Edwin 'Ted' Leonard Wood, 1RSF, brother to Bert, who was KIA on 26/9/17 aged 25. Also Ted and Bert's Brother-in-Law, Lt Harold Ernest Dewar MC, DoW after heroic action at the Somme with 11 Cheshire Regt. Aged just 27. "The age is best, which is the first, When youth and blood are warmer."
