I recently obtained "Forgotten Flotilla, British submariners in Russia 1914-1919," by Vice Admiral Leslie H. Ashmore. Their actions, and those of Russian submariners, in the Baltic Sea have been of interest for some time. Although it is not mentioned in the book, other sources suggest that Lt.Cdr. Francis Goodheart, commander of H.M.S. E8, may have received the Order of St. George 4th Class sometime in 1916. Perhaps someone knows if this is true, and if so the date and why he received the award. Thank you. agblume

His name does not appear in 'Naval Honours and Awards (Foreign Orders)' by Hayward, so it does seem unlikely that he recieved the above award.

D.S.O.

GOODHART, Lieut. COM. Francis Herbert Heaven, in submarine 'E8', was mentioned in the official report of the action with the German Squadron in Heligoland Bight 28th August 1914, as having been in contact with the enemy resuting in the destuction of the cruisers "Mainz" "Ariadne" and "Koln" and several destroyers (London Gazette 21st October 1914) Promoted Commander 31st December 1915. Awarded D.S.O. in recognition of his services in command of a British submarine operating in the Baltic Sea (London Gazette 31st May 1916).

Also sank the German Cruiser 'Prinz Adalbert' in the Baltic 23rd October 1915.

Hello John, My supposition was based on the fact that he and his crew were responsible for sinking the Prinz Adalbert. I believe the Russians awarded the Order of St. George 4th Class to Lt.Cdr. Francis Cromie for sinking the cruiser Undine. I thought they might have done the same for Goodheart. Thanks for putting the matter to rest. Cheers, agblume

Hello august g blume

Prinz Adalbert had already been damaged by Cdr. Horton in E9 earlier in the year, so possibly the Russians did not consider Goodhart's sinking in the same light as Cromie's.

Hi Listers

Cdr. Francis Herbert Heaveningham Goodhart recived the same Russian awards as Cdr. Francis Newton Allen Cromie and they are both in the London Gazettee 11th July 1916. With the citation of;

"Conferred upon them by His Majesty the Emperor of Russia in recognition of valuable services

rendered by them"

Cdr. F.H.H. Goodhart's awards were

Companion of the Distinguished Service Order

Albert Medal [Posthumous]

Chevalier of the Legion of Honour [France]

Forth Class Order of St George [Russia]

Forth Class Order of St Vladimir [Russia]

Mentioned in Dispatches

23.10.1915, HMs/m E8 sank the armoured cruiser Prinz Adalbert the largest German warship sunk by submarine during WW1. On its return to duties after being damaged by Cdr. M.K. Horton 02.07.1915.

Hope this helps

Many thanks to Spithead, Vectis and Domwalsh for taking time to solve my question about Goodheart and his Order of St. George 4th Class and St. Vladimir as well. Much appreciated. Cheers, agblume
