Paul Johnson Posted 17 November , 2003 Share Posted 17 November , 2003 OK. I have tried this before but it's worth another go. My Grandfather served with the Royal Enginners during WW1. I know that he served with the IWT but cannot establish which Unit he was with. I have a copy of his service record from the PRO but it only mentions IWT. Are there any other avenues I could explore, or am I fighting a lost cause?

Chris_Baker Posted 17 November , 2003 Share Posted 17 November , 2003 Hello Paul. Welcome to the forum. It's often very difficult if not impossible to identify a unit of the RE. But we can try. Can you tell us his number, and any other useful facts like dates?
Neil Burns Posted 17 November , 2003 Share Posted 17 November , 2003 Hi Paul, I can understand your frustration as I have tried to research my own Great Uncle who served with an Inland Waterway Transport unit in the AEF. From what little I've been able to find, it seems most IWT units were dispersed along a canal or in various ports. This makes the job of tracking an individual very difficult. Unfortunately for me there is no forum similar to this one for the AEF, fortunately for you there is this forum for the BEF! Take care, Neil
