bmac Posted 21 November , 2003 Share Posted 21 November , 2003 Can anyone tell me the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the destroyer HMS Contest on 19th September 1917 and which U-boat was responsible. Trying to help a relative of a crew member living in Australia. I have the technical information about the ship.
Malcolm Posted 21 November , 2003 Share Posted 21 November , 2003 HMS Contest 18th September 1917, North Atlantic in the South Western Approaches to the English Channel - torpedoed by German U-boat. Possibly one of the ships transferred to Devonport and on convoy escort or patrol duties. One source dates her loss on the 19th September. Her wartime crew was around 77. Fifty men were picked up. U Boat.net does not give any details
Guest Pete Wood Posted 21 November , 2003 Share Posted 21 November , 2003 HMS Contest is one of just three per cent of the total WW1 losses (approximately 7,400 ships) which have not been claimed by (or attrributed to) a U-Boat - or a mine laid by a U-boat.
