PhilB Posted 29 January , 2007 Share Posted 29 January , 2007 Quote:- From a wealthy and privileged background, Robert Anthony Eden was born on June 12, 1897, at Windlestone Hall near Bishop Auckland, Durham. He was the third son of Sir William Eden, with one sister, Marjorie, older than all the brothers, of which there was a total of four. Young Eden was educated at Sandroyd Prep School in Surrey and then at Eton, where he distinguished himself in sports but little else. He interrupted his schooling to fight in the King's Royal Rifle Corps during World War I (during which his eldest and youngest brothers were killed). In the course of the war he became the youngest adjutant by 1916, won a military cross in 1917, and by the end of the war he had become a brigade major. In 1919 he attended Christ Church College, Oxford, gaining first-class honors in Oriental languages in 1922. Eden looks to have been an adjutant at the age of 19 and brigade major at 21. It was mentioned today on TV that he "won an MC for rescuing a comrade under fire". Can anyone expand on this, or on the fate of his brothers? Tom Morgan Posted 29 January , 2007 Share Posted 29 January , 2007 Phil I believe he rescued a fellow-officer in 1916, on the Somme. Tom

Anthony Edens two brothers were killed in WW1: "Of the 28 members of Eden's Middle Fourth at Eton, nine were killed. With them died the flower of a generation, including two of Eden's brothers, Timothy and Nicholas. Anthony, who joined the King's Royal Rifle Corps, at 19 became the youngest adjutant in the British army. In the mud of Ypres, he crawled out under the wire and brought back a wounded sergeant under a hail of German fire. He won Britain's Military Cross." Source: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/...,891429,00.html According to the above article Eden's brothers were called Timothy and Nicholas. this is either poor reporting, or they were pet or middle names. They were called John, and, possibly, William. John, has "brother of Anthony Eden" in his CWGC entry: http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...casualty=488339 I would be interested in knowing who the second brother was. I suspect it is William Eden, using the address of another of the family estates. However, I could be wrong and William could just be a kinsman: http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...asualty=1611128 Also, Anthony Eden's son Simon was aircrew killed in Burma in 1945: http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...asualty=2085328
