Can someone tell me the significance (if any) in John Henry Storer's (Drake Battalion RND) number : Bristol Z/4855?

Thanks,

Chris Burge.

Bristol signifies the Home Division of the serviceman. The others were London, Mersey, Clyde, Tyneside and Sussex.

At the end of 1914 service numbers were prefixed with a Z and they indicated a 'hostilities only' man.

Neil York is definately your man with RND queries.

Terry,

Thanks for the explanation. That makes sense as John Henry did not volunteer until Dec 1915 (possiby under the Derby scheme).

Chris Burge.
