Hello all. Just wondering if anyone can point to information wrt garrison batallions during WW1.

My grandfather served with the 2 GB Northumberland Fusiliers in India after serving

with the 8 Welsh at Gallipoli and in Mesopotamia. I am interested why he was transferred

and suspect illness or injury - he had malaria. Were GBs made up of men 'less fit' for

regular army duties? I understand that Turkish POWs from Mespot were detained in India;

would the GBs there guard them as well as performing other guard duties? Many thanks.

Hello Paul

You are right on both counts.

Garrison Battalions were composed of men who had been medically downgraded. Many such units provided detachments for POW guard duties.
