Guest paul james Posted 6 December , 2003 Share Posted 6 December , 2003 Hello all. Just wondering if anyone can point to information wrt garrison batallions during WW1. My grandfather served with the 2 GB Northumberland Fusiliers in India after serving with the 8 Welsh at Gallipoli and in Mesopotamia. I am interested why he was transferred and suspect illness or injury - he had malaria. Were GBs made up of men 'less fit' for regular army duties? I understand that Turkish POWs from Mespot were detained in India; would the GBs there guard them as well as performing other guard duties? Many thanks. Chris_Baker Posted 6 December , 2003 Share Posted 6 December , 2003 Hello Paul You are right on both counts. Garrison Battalions were composed of men who had been medically downgraded. Many such units provided detachments for POW guard duties.
