Tom Morgan Posted 25 June , 2004 Share Posted 25 June , 2004 I have only just come across this thread. I was interested to read about ideas of "nationality" and how this was (at the time) chiefly concerned with where a person was born. What nationality would a man have been considered to have if he was born in Germany because his British parents were living there, I wonder. Taking "Soldiers Died in the Great War" as a sample of a large number of soldiers who were at some time invited to state where they were born: There are 13 soldiers listed who gave their birthplaces as "xxxxxxxx, Germany." Their names are: Harry Barclay Henry Joe Burhouse Harry Campbell Donald Leo Carden Ayscough Cunningham Harry Evans Jacob Gotz Hugo James Kershaw Charles Pfeffer Peter Heinrich Sievers George William Weirich Percy Wolfenden Herbert Wood Presumably they were considered British enough to be allowed to enlist?
