Michael Posted 11 December , 2003 Share Posted 11 December , 2003 This Buffs officer was drowned on 9/11/17 when the SS Umgani sank off the West coast of Scotland en route to West Africa. His body was found on 22/12/17 and he was buried at Tobermoy Cemetery on Christmas Day. CWGC states that he is buried in Paddington Cemetery. How did George end up in West London? I didn't think that families were allowed to move war graves. Michael
paul guthrie Posted 11 December , 2003 Share Posted 11 December , 2003 I think Terry Denham has told us before families could pay to move bodies within the UK.
Terry Denham Posted 11 December , 2003 Share Posted 11 December , 2003 Michael If the body was buried in a private grave in the UK, CWGC has no jurisdiction over it at all. If, for some reason, the n-o-k wanted it moved at a later date, they would only have had to get the relevant authority from the Home Office for the exhumation. This has happened a number of times within the UK - though not an everyday occurance. This would not apply to casualties overseas.
