John,

From The history of The 7th Battalion by C Digby Planck.

There were no specific battles at this time of year being the middle of winter.

On the 8/1/17the Battalion entrained for Ypres and relieved the 22nd London Regt in the Hill 60 sector: it poured with rain the whole way up and evryone got soaked to the skin.

A and B Companies occupied the front C were in support at Strong point 9 with D at Railway dugouts. Each day in the line was much as before , with all the usual daily hates, Jacksons Dump receiving its full share.

Several blinding snowstorms occured during this tour and all were glad when the Post Office Rifles came up on the 13th and relieved ours, who returned to Halifax Camp, except C who went to Pioneer Camp; the journey back was a nightmare through a bitter snowstorm.

While in the line the Battalion lost four men killed

I can assume one of these was your Grandfather. The history does not usually name the soldiers killed unless they were an officer.

You may get more detail form the Battalion diary held at Kew reference WO95/2730.

You may also want to get a copy of Harrys War (Pte Harry Sinton'S experiences and paintingsof service with the 7th Londons)

Hope this is of some use

Steve
