erinc Posted 11 May , 2007 Share Posted 11 May , 2007 Does anyone know if it was possible to get married on service in Egypt during WW1? I have found a photo in my grandfather's collection from his service in Egypt and it is a collection of men and women in front of a tent. The woman seated in the centre is holding a boquet of flowers, and all seem to be formally(?) dressed. erin

Chris Henschke Posted 11 May , 2007 Share Posted 11 May , 2007 A private from 10th Battalion AIF married a nurse in mid January 1915, whilst at Mena Camp. The wedding was in the officers' mess tent. They were both from Adelaide, originally. Could it be this wedding? The private's name was Phillip de Quetteville Robin and he married Miss Nellie Irene Honeywell. Kirkes Lamb Posted 11 May , 2007 Share Posted 11 May , 2007 I am amazed at where you guys find all this information from-have you thought about trying for Master Mind? Have you any other useful info on their time here in Egypt? I am fascinated by the number of AIF graves here in Egypt.
erinc Posted 11 May , 2007 Author Share Posted 11 May , 2007 Sorry - should have put down that my grandfather arrived July 1916 attached to 2nd Light Horse and was taken prisoner of war 1.5.1918 while attached to 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance - so I would guess that the wedding(?) would occur during this period. Is there anywhere to search for these records? erin

Would you be happy too share the photograph you have? Thank you, Ruth If you get stuck Ruth, you could try asking here- https://trove.nla.gov.au/work/198290543?keyword=Philip de Quetteville Robin They were married in the officers mess tent at Mena. A description here- https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/rendition/nla.news-article212159390.3.pdf?followup=4a7d9d44940601b5ea2c4ecb07aa55a5 There is a battalion history of the 10th Battalion titled Silent Voices by Robert Kearney. There are two photographs in the book of the camp at Mena if you need to improvise with your painting. Scott Edited 4 April by Waddell Added more. bosveldr Posted 4 April Share Posted 4 April Thank you for these links. I have not been able to find a clear photograph of Nellie. There might not be one, but I appreciate the suggestions.
travers61 Posted 4 April Share Posted 4 April (edited) Nellie left Liverpool on 24th December 1914 travelling First Class together with a Mrs Mabel Honeywell on board the SS Worcestershire. The ships intended route was Marseilles, Port Said, Colombo & Rangoon. Some websites refer to this ship as a troop ship 1914-1916 & others as a mixed trooper. The latter seems a better option if the Honeywell's travelled first class. Eventually sank after hitting a mine off Colombo in 1917. I have tried the trees on ancestry for a photo of Nellie but no luck. Edited 4 April by travers61
