I am doing some strictly amateur research on the soldier father of a friend of mine.

The soldier in question is Private Jesse Hiscock, 85505, who signed up in 1906, went AWOL after hitting a sergeant and then seems to have rejoined in 1913/14. He was transferred to the reserve in 1918.

His paybook at the time of his transfer shows that he served with the DCLI and with the Devon Regiment.

A photo of him with mates in 1906 is shown here. He is bottom left.

I have also asked a question about a photo of him in uniform in the 'Uniforms' section.

Hi,

great picture.

In your research, have you ever come across a Henry Harris of the Devon regiment? Possibly a Sgt. His nickname in the regiment was "tich". Apparently he was a rather tall, well built chap.

Henry Harris served in the Devon regiment from 1898 onwards.

many thanks

Paul
