john w. Posted 28 December , 2003 Share Posted 28 December , 2003 Frederick Isaac Capon is listed on the Stock (Essex) War memorial but he cannot be traced in the usual areas. All I have is literally the name.. so I gave it to the charity MIC lookup team and this is what they found.. Unfortunately we cannot find him. There are no specific matches with Frederick Isaac although there are a few possibles. F Capon Suffolk Regt Pte 13447 RAMC Pte 142503 BWM & VM - strange as there is no entry to look at the medal roll. 15 Star (RAMC/1C page 28) Theatre (1) France & Flanders Entry 08/06/1915 Frederick Capon RFA Gnr L/42248 BWM & VM (FRA/169B page 13791) Frederick Capon RW Surrey Regt Pte 19879 Lab Corps 56534 BWM & VM (LC/101B35 page 3492) Frederick Capon Norf Regt Pte 18236 Lab Corps 605468 BWM & VM (LC101B232 page 23661) via Norf. He has looked at all of the medal rolls to try and shed anymore light, and there is nothing. Marc and I have both tried to find service records and there is nothing. Marc also checked for an entry in the National Roll of Great War Index - again nothing. Marc has really done a thorough check of your man at the NA. Anyone any ideas based on what it written above? Why can't he be found? could he be a 'foreigner'? It is assumed that if he wasnt born in the village that he lived there... All ideas greatfully received John

christine liava'a Posted 28 December , 2003 Share Posted 28 December , 2003 Stock (formerly known as Stock Harvard) is a small village in Essex between Billericay and Chelmsford It consists of a picturesque high street, four pubs, three churches, a small but well stocked supermarket, an off licence, a paper shop, barbers and an award-winning fish and chip shop. The village population has increased with building of new estates but hopefully the village atmosphere will live on for a few more years. Stock lies around 318 feet above sea level and is one of the highest points in Essex. Traces of Roman occupation have been found in the meadow around the Catholic Church (the highest point of the village) along with traces of an Iron age settlement. This is also the site of the old beacon which is the origin of the "Tansy ring". Tansy plants only prosper in ash rich soil. The origin of the village name is still open to dispute. One idea is that it comes from the Saxon "stocce" which translates to "wood", but whilst there is a wooded area it is probably not of sufficient size to be significant. The name is more likely to have come from "Stoke" as in Stoke Poges and Stoke-on-Trent. The Saxon for a steward is "Hereward" so this would translate Stock Harvard as "the place of the steward" of the Parish of Buttsbury, of which Stock was a hamlet. The stock brick is claimed by experts to have originated from this village. This brick was of a yellowish colour with a mauve streak caused by the addition of ashes before the brick was fired. The last operating brickworks being at the "cobblers" now owned by Sir John & Lady Carter and the clay came from the clay pit in Common (formerly Workhouse) Lane. Sadly this industry caesed to be viable at the turn of the century.

Ivor Lee Posted 28 December , 2003 Share Posted 28 December , 2003 John If the Frederick Capon is the one shown as serving in 14 Battalion Labour Corps (56534) then there is another intriguing factor. Firstly he is shown as 14 Battalion LC there wasn't one. Secondly, he is buried in HAIDAR PASHA CEMETERY, TURKEY but 14 COmpany served in France! There is an error on the CWGC details. It should read 14th Battalion The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regt) transferred to 95 Company, Labour Corps. 95 Company did serve in Salonika and both his RWS and Labour Corps numbers show that he was in 14th RWS whch became 95 Company LC. If you manage to positively identify this Frederick Capon as your man let me know as I have a fair amount on his Company from Oct 1916 when they left the UK until August 1918. Alison Arnold Posted 28 December , 2003 Share Posted 28 December , 2003 John, Going back to the 1881 census and asuming the Ellen in the previous post was the Capon you get this entry. Edward Capon Head age 63 occ ag lab Mary Ann Capon age 53 Ellen Capon dau age 26 occ formerly domestic servant Edward J Capon son age 12 Arthur Capon Gd Son age 9 James Capon Gd Son age 8 James Capon Gd Capon age 7 Joseph Capon Gd Son age 4 Ernest Capon Gd Son age 1 Again all where born in Stock Essex. The address they were living at is Workhouse Houses, Stock Essex. This probably only adds to the confusion!! Ali
christine liava'a Posted 28 December , 2003 Share Posted 28 December , 2003 Interesting that a 2 year old is living with an aunt & uncle. Where were his parents? Is Upton Park, Essex, anywhere near Chelmsford or Stock? Frank Edward Capon of NZ has a mother, Mrs A Richards, living there A second marriage no doubt. Is she possibly Frederick's mother too? christine liava'a Posted 28 December , 2003 Share Posted 28 December , 2003 If Ellen Wright nee Capon (aged 26) is Frederick Capon's aunt, who was his father? There is a big gap between her and the next child Edward J aged 12.

Alison Arnold Posted 28 December , 2003 Share Posted 28 December , 2003 Interesting that a 2 year old is living with an aunt & uncle. Christina, I have come across this before within my own family research. In that instance it was to disguise that both children were illegitimate and the mother was living a few streets away with a third child. She eventually married the childrens father 10 years after the first child was born!! Could it be something similar? Ali

Terry_Reeves Posted 28 December , 2003 Share Posted 28 December , 2003 John There is another possibility. That he served in the UK for all of his service and thus never qualified for any medals. After that he may have died as a civilian, say from illness, and the local war memorial committee added his name anyway. I have come across this on a couple of memorials I have researched.
