stevehowarth Posted 28 December , 2003 Share Posted 28 December , 2003 Hi Looking up a soldier in the Army Service Corps on the CWGC site, it came up with the jargon: Unit text - '10th Div. Train' What exactly does this mean? The individual I am looking into is Private Ernest Platt, service no. M2/121782 - does this contain any meaning? He died in Salonika in July 1917. Whilst I'm at it, can anybody recommend a book which details the movements of the ASC in the FWW? Thanks Steve
Jock Bruce Posted 28 December , 2003 Share Posted 28 December , 2003 Steve, the train is essentially the logistic/supply component of a formation, in this case 10 Div - have a look on The Long, Long Trail under 10 Div and you'll probably find the make up of their train. An 'M2' number means the guy was a motor driver or a motor associated trade. No one book could cover the movements of all ASC units. The best around is ASC 1902 - 1918 by Michael Young. Leo Cooper, 2000. ISBN 085052 730 9. Jock
