mike j dunn Posted 2 August , 2007 Share Posted 2 August , 2007 Dick, I have recently joined The Forum and have just discovered your email about school and university registers. I am hoping that your generous offer is still open as it was made 3 years ago. I am interested in a pair of undergraduates from Magdalen College, Oxford who were there in 1908. They were Oscar L Bickford and W Gordon McMinnies. They both competed in the first motor cycle event at the Brooklands Circuit in 1908. I would be very grateful for any nformation you can provide on either of them, With best regards, Mike

MBrockway Posted 8 August , 2007 Share Posted 8 August , 2007 Hi, Do you have Worcester King's Cathedral School? Cheers Duncan. Duncan, I think the school is better known as King's School, Worcester. Maybe it would be worth Dick having another check? If you are in the area, there are Honour Boards for the Great War in College Hall, the school's main assembly hall. Cheers, Mark Brockway Duncan, It's over two years since you asked about King's, but I dropped in while in Worcestershire a few weekends ago and took these pictures of the Memorial Windows in Worcester Cathedral to those members of the King's School, Worcester who fell in the Great War. The crest is the school badge and the scroll underneath the badge to either side contains "Regia Schola Vigorniensis" - i.e. the king's school of Worcester. I took photos of the Memorial Boards in College Hall - PM me if you'd like copies. Obviously the names match. I have also been speaking to the school and I understand that the Headmaster during the war, William Chappel, was much affected by the losses (including his own son) and wrote detailed obituaries of each fallen Old Vigornian in the school magazines of the period. The school library has copies, though one would have to contact the school to get access. Dick: I'm trying to get hold of photocopies of these and will gladly pass you a set if I succeed. Chappel donated money towards a Memorial Reading Room in the centre of the school next to Hostel House, which the school now uses as a drama space I think. There were also Fives courts built in memory of the dead. These were actively used in the 1970's but have now been demolished. Their dedication plaque is still visible however. Archer Posted 17 August , 2007 Share Posted 17 August , 2007 Many thanks, Dick - much appreciated anyway! I have since discovered that Harvard Library has a copy of The Admission Registers of St. Paul's School from 1876 to 1905 by Robert Barlow Gardiner (1906) - but it doesn't appear to be available online yet! Peter Rufus Posted 17 August , 2007 Share Posted 17 August , 2007 Dick Good Morning and thank you very much for the reply concerning Cpt.Thomas Rufus. I do have that information (I have used it for my Avatar, together with his photo - but it's so small as to be unreadable) but what I didn't know was that it came from De Ruvigney's Roll of Honour. I really should have listed what I do know about him. Apart from the above,I know from the 1901 Census that his Father was a Publican so his address The Willows could have been a local Pub in Goostrey. I also know he worked for a Manchester Bank and they have been kind enough to provide some details including his work reports and another photo taken when he joined up. He is also mentioned in the History of the Lancashire Fusiliers 1914-1918. My reason for contacting you Dick was to see if he was mentioned in his school record if it exists. He attended Central High School in Manchester but I can't find any details about the place. It would be nice to know about his academic life. As you can see I'm really just trying to put flesh on the bones. Many thanks again Dick My best regards Pete
