Yorts Posted 14 January , 2004 Share Posted 14 January , 2004 Not exactly WW1 related but there is a link! Researching a soldier who rejoined in 1915, but had previously seen service with 2/HLI and the Malakand Field Force entitling him to a IGSM 1895 bar Punjab Frontier. I have been able to read up on the M.F.F., but can only find a passing reference to the battle of Tanga Pass. I know the HLI suffered casualties that day (1 KiA plus wounded) and broke the enemy with a bayonet charge. Could anyone give me a few more details on the actions that 2/HLI fought in the campaign, especially at Tanga Pass? Best regards, Alex.
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 14 January , 2004 Share Posted 14 January , 2004 Alex At the end of the Malakand Campaign Brig.Gen Sir Bindon Blood organised what was known as the Buner Field Force ( using many of the units which had formed the MFF) to undertake punitive operations against the Bunerwal tribe. The operations only lasted from 2-17 Jan 1898. During this period the 2HLI were in action at Tanga Pass on 7 Jan 98. where their one fatal casualty was 4409 Private John McMasters. This is an eye witness account written by Robert Baden-Powell. http://www.pinetreeweb.com/bp-memories12.htm Hope this helps Dave
