widwick Posted 14 January , 2004 Share Posted 14 January , 2004 Hello I have a soldier who is shown on the Medal Roll as 'Attd G.B. Base Depot'. I assume from other indications that this was in 1917-18 and in France. Can anyone tell me what and where it was, please? Tony
Yorts Posted 14 January , 2004 Share Posted 14 January , 2004 Hi, Attached Great Britain Base Depot? I know you stated that you thought it to be in France, but this is the most likely thing I can think of. What Regiment was he? He would have had to have served in a theatre of war at some stage to have qualified for a BWM / VM though. Rgds, Alex.
widwick Posted 15 January , 2004 Author Share Posted 15 January , 2004 Hi Alex Thank you for the reply. The soldier was a Sgt in 2/6th Bn Durham LI. This territorial force battalion did not enter France until 6 May 1918. It was initially a Garrison Guard Bn. The medal roll lists 2/6th Bn first, then on second line: 'Attn G.B. Base Depot', leading me to think it was somewhere in France. Tony
charlesmessenger Posted 15 January , 2004 Share Posted 15 January , 2004 widwick All becomes clear. It is Garrison Bns Base Depot, which was probably at Etaples, but I'm not sure about this. Charles M
