Old Chap Posted 16 January , 2004 Share Posted 16 January , 2004 My grand father served in the 1st R.I.R. Can anyone help me out and tell me where abouts in Liverpol they were stationed before going to France? I have a copy of the war diary for the period but it doesn't give much information. He enlisted in 1908 and served in the 1st and 2nd R.I.R. being wounded 7/7/16 before being transfered to the Labour Corps in 1918. Cheers, Bill
Tom Morgan Posted 16 January , 2004 Share Posted 16 January , 2004 When war was declared they were in Aden. They embarked for the UK on the 27th September, and arrived in Liverpool on 22nd October but went on to Hursley Park, Winchester, where they joined 25th Bde., 8th Division. That's according to Brigadier E. A. James - "BRitish Regiments 1914-1818." Tom
Desmond7 Posted 16 January , 2004 Share Posted 16 January , 2004 They could not have been 'in Liverpool' for any period of time between coming back from Aden and joining with the 8th Div. I suggest they were merely in transit and were never in barracks or garrison in Liverpool. But it might be interesting to know if many first or second generation Irish scousers joined the regiment!
