Despite entering all the name combinations for:

200008 Pte G.A.BALLS age 44 1st/4th Norfolk Regiment died 24/04/1917

I cannot trace him in the LG for his DCM award.

Is there a trick that I am missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

chris,

No help i am afraid but i have found often that i can enter the same info, or atleast seems it to me, and yet get differing results on occasions. It maybe that it reads capitals and rank differently.

For instance i put in General Forestier-Walker the other day and it came up nil, so i put just his name in and got six returns. My assumption being that he was not a General when in the gazette!!!

Arm.

Chris,

A check in Recipients of the Distinguished Conduct Medal 1914-1920 by R. W. Walker finds the following infromation that might help you locate him in the LG:

Norfolk Regiment

270 Pte Balls. G. A. (note different Regimental No. from CWGC?)

1/4 Bn.

Theatre of war = G (Gallipoli)

London Gazette Citation date - 11.3.16

Unable to check the London Gazette myself this morning, site appears to be down at present?

Beware also that entries in the London Gazette can be wrong. My uncle's entry for his 2nd war Dutch gallantry medal has him down for the wrong one.
