Moonraker Posted 10 November , 2007 Share Posted 10 November , 2007 Bit surprised that I appear to be the first to mention this but three Somerset "Thankful villages" - those that had no Great War dead - have received plaques. See Daily Telegraph today Moonraker
NigelS Posted 11 November , 2007 Share Posted 11 November , 2007 Hi Moonraker I would guess that in the early years after the war it would have been considered an act of schadenfreude to celebrate the safe homecoming of all of a communties fighting men when many other villages might have seen a large proportion, possibly all (does anybody know of such communities?), of their young men killed. There was a feature on BBC1's "One Show" earlier in the week where Carol Thatcher visited the village of Upper Slaughter which didn't lose any men in either the Great War or WWII. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/theoneshow/article/20...t_station.shtml & for video http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/check/t...m=1&bbram=1 NigelS
