Blackblue Posted 22 January , 2004 Share Posted 22 January , 2004 Can anyone assist? In the event a soldier joined the cavalry at the start of the war (in this case enlisted as General Service Cavalry and subsequently posted to 5th Dragoon Guards) how was his training administered? Was he allocated to a unit straight away then going to a Reserve Regiment of Cavalry for training or was he allocated from a Reserve Regiment after initial training? Are there any references which contain the locations of the Reserve Regiments during the war and information on which regiments each Reserve Regiment serviced? Terry_Reeves Posted 22 January , 2004 Share Posted 22 January , 2004 With regard to your last question, that information can be found in "British Regiments 1914-18" by Brigadier EA James OBE TD. Still available through Naval and Military Press I believe. Terry Reeves
Blackblue Posted 23 January , 2004 Author Share Posted 23 January , 2004 Thanks Terry. Don't suppose anyone out there has a copy? I am just interested ni which reserve regiment served the 5th Dragoon Guards at the start of the war and where they were based. Tim
Joe Sweeney Posted 23 January , 2004 Share Posted 23 January , 2004 Tim, 1st Reserve Cavalry Regiment was formed on mobilization at Aldershot. It had the 1st and 5th Dragoon Guards affiliated. More Yeomanry were added as time went on. It was later absorbed into the newly formed 4th Reserve Cavalry Regiment (there was also the original 4th Reserve which was absorbed in 1917 by another newly forming Reserve unit at Tidworth) at Aldershot in 1917 Joe Sweeney
