Guest Geelong Posted 19 January , 2003 Share Posted 19 January , 2003 I am trying to find out what Regiment my Grandfather William Henry Keal served in at Gallipoli. Possibly enlisting in York or Lincolnshire
jim_davies Posted 20 January , 2003 Share Posted 20 January , 2003 Hi, your best bet would be looking at the PRO records, but failing that here's some battalions that served at Gallipoli with Lincolnshire/Yorkshire roots. 6/Lincolnshire, 33rd Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division 6/East Yorks, Pioneers, 11th (Northern) Division 9/West Yorks, 32nd Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division 6/York & Lancaster, 32nd Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division 6/Yorks, 32nd Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division However men often ended up in units for any number of reasons regardless of where they came from. For example my great-great uncle enlisted in Boston, Lincs but found (I'm not sure why) himself in the Connaught Rangers, being KIA at Hill 60, Gallipoli. Good luck. michaeldr Posted 20 January , 2003 Share Posted 20 January , 2003 Jim is right; your best bet is to come along the other track ie. try to get sight of your grandfather's records first. For a full list of British regiments at Gallipoli try to get hold of ''British Regiments at Gallipoli" by Ray Westlake, published by Leo Cooper, London, 1996 Best of luck Michael D. R. Alan Lines Posted 20 January , 2003 Share Posted 20 January , 2003 Geelong Sounds like you are in Australia? If so it might be an idea to get a researcher in the U.K to look up his Medal Index Card (MIC) and Medal Roll details. The MIC will tell you which Regiment(s) he was in and if his active service started before 1916 where and when his active overseas service started. The Medal Roll details will tell you what battalion he served in. Keal is not a very common name. (only 10 fatalities in WW1 in the British Army so probably a lot less than 100 served) The problem will be if there is more than one William Henry or if he enlisted as plain William. A regimental number if you have it would be the answer here. A straight forward search should be less than £10 which at current rates is roughly AU$ 4,500,000!!!
