Ken S. Posted 10 April , 2010 Share Posted 10 April , 2010 Remarque's All Quiet on The Western Front remains unsurpassed in my opinion. After the war, thousands of war novels were churned out in Germany, yet one of the few that people now care to acknowledge happens to be this stridently anti-war book. While I agree that it is a good book, I hardly think that it is representative of German war fiction, nor is it likely the most accurate novelistic portrayal of life in the trenches for the common German soldier. Ken S. Posted 10 April , 2010 Share Posted 10 April , 2010 The Wars by Timothy Findley It's been a while since I read this, and can't remember much to be honest; just certain parts that have convinced me that it's little more than literary drivel; unfortunately, it seems to be on a reading list at just about every Canadian university, and for most its left-leaning readers it will be the only book that they'll read dealing with the Great War. A few universities may still have a course that includes "Generals Die in Bed," which is quite good.
