I have completed looking through 1,000 Newfoundlander’s service records. Just 5,000+ to go. Looking at the numbers I have found around 430 lists

430 list at about 15 names per list gives say 6450 names.

6450/1000 gives 6.5 names per svc record.    x6000 svc records gives potential of the order of  40, 000 names. An excellent result.

Will FindmyPast add these to their indexing (someone posed this question earlier) ?

I don't see why/how FMP would add them. They don't have the originating service record so it doesn't fit into their record sets from WO363 & 364.

But if someone was able to draw their attention to this thread and the original source, perhaps they might be interested?

They'd have to sign up to an arrangement with bac-lac or TheRooms?

Obviously be nice if they indexed them for us. The logistics of keeping tabs just on the lists is going to get boggling let alone indexing each entry.

I suppose as they have the resources to index them and that they've indexed the UK lists letting them know wouldn't hurt.

Are there alternatives? TheGenealogist perhaps.

Back in 2015, inspired by SteveE who had found some of these lists in the Hamilton Silver War Badge Rolls WO 329/3035 on a visit to Kew, I found some more in WO 329/3034 and Diane (Bardess) posted them on here for me. See my post on this thread 20/10/2015 (p 19). When the SWB Rolls were digitized I compared 3034 to the copies of the lists I had photographed at Kew. Not all of the lists had been scanned. I later mentioned this to someone at Kew who said that the objective was to copy the Rolls.

The numbers and names on these lists do not come up on a check on FMP, therefore they have not been indexed. Two examples:

WO 329/3034 - Hamilton SWB Roll DA 0890 to 1200 - p 293/358 List H 5115.

WO 329/3035 - Hamilton SWB Roll DA 1201 to 1500 - p 39/348 List H 5092.

I did look for other lists at Kew without much success because it was such a time consuming exercise and I had other things to do. I later went through all the SWB Rolls on Ancestry. The probability is that there will be many more of these lists in the Original SWB Rolls that have not been scanned if 3034 is an example.

Genealogist are good at indexing but my thought was that it compliments those useful bits of paper that FMP has already done so well. I don't know how to draw their attention- I've tried and failed with other items in the past!

It certainly compliments those already on FMP and I'm sure eventually an individual will pop up on multiple lists so it makes sense to have them all in one place.

I've seen in the Exeter Office for SWB the backs of some sheets have full addresses for the badges sent out, can't recall the dates but potentially useful.

Wasn't the scanning of medal rolls an Ancestry/TNA partnership? In which case Ancestry made the decision not to bother with the back of the roll. Must have made the same decision regarding the lists from 363/4 whereas FMP excelled.

As these lists still appear to be unique and we know the number involved,  I’m considering trying to index them. I’m searching through them in the hope of finding some men who were admitted to Gloucestershire Red Cross Hospitals for another database I’m working on. That information is not indexed by FMP, so I have to browse through the records.

I’ve got around 10,000 of these lists saved from FMP and found just 12 with the information I’m interested in so I might be lucky with the Newfoundlander’s records. I think I’ll transcribe a few and see how long it takes.

Meanwhile hear is another batch

Casualty Lists.xml 25.24 kB · 2 downloads

Some years ago I sought out RE Lists from 1916 and I added them to my index of wounded RE from the 1916 Times Casualty Lists and the names of Other Ranks in the 1916 War Diaries, those on Ancestry and others that I downloaded at Kew. The main problem I found with indexing was that all names and numbers had to be checked for accuracy. There are lots of mistakes on these lists. I also started a sub thread "Royal Engineers Sick and Wounded 1916" for those part lists that had no date on them but I could date by checking for Service and Pension Records. I no longer have this index and have narrowed my RE enquiries down to those original recruits into the County Palatine RE who, like my gf, do not have a 1914 - 15 Star and the names of the RE wounded in the OCL in the Times 11/10/1916, on which my gf is named.

Dink,

At 20 mins per list your previous post with 14 lists would take nearly 5 hours to transcribe. The time you're taking to go through the files, extract the list and post them up is much appreciated but with the potential numbers of individuals across all NF files adding transcriptions is veering into a full time job that could take years?

Another forum member commenced transcribing them some time ago and must have done close to 150 lists with 5,400 ish entries which I think were checked for correct details and hyperlinked to CWGC and medal details. You may see older posts saying wish I hadn't started!

I suspect everyone has their own way of creating a usable database for this kind of data. Given the size of the project a lot of thought needs to go into how to proceed. Personally I'd want to import it into a spreadsheet and can't actually tell from your post how that would actually work (using phone at present) although EG. I'd want number and rank in two columns.

On the other hand others may be happy to have a searchable word file or have other criteria for spreadsheet columns depending on an individual's expertise with Excel or similar.

Tailoring the transcription for different people/uses would be a onerous task. Would be interested to see what others think.

Progress lists & POW lists follow a different format. Would they merge easily into the other lists.

Excellent effort on providing all this data.

Given the scale of the transcription project, feeding them into OCR and doing your best with macros to extract information to the correct fields would be imperfect, but perhaps practical.

TEW and others thanks for your thoughts.

I hav put the data into Excel pretty much as you describe (see attached screenshot). The other types of list would indeed need to be done separately. The timescale might not be as long as you have worked out. I'm going to work on a few more lists to get a better idea. I'm getting through the service records quicker thant I first thought and can see that being complete in a couple of months.

Open Bolt

I've tried a putting a couple of lists through OCR which as you say is imperfect by may help reduce the work involved. Not realy use macros can't say how they would help.

Thanks again, Dave

Dave

I spent a good part of this morning going right through this thread, and the one I started "Royal Engineers Sick and Wounded 1916" in Soldiers Forum. It was July 2018 when you advised me of some RE lists. I remembered reading a post about Newfoundland Soldiers and I wanted to refresh my memory about the records in the SWB Rolls that I had mentioned.

It was a gentleman called Shawn, (Wizard2550), who posted on 29/07/2009 (p 11). I've sent him a pm to advise him of the current situation. He last visited the Forum one year ago so it might reach him.

SteveE found the first batch in the Hamilton SWB Rolls WO 329/3035. On 24/01/2010 Diane (Bardess) posted some on behalf of hmsk212 that were in WO 329/3032 and also posted the ones from 329/3034 on my behalf as mentioned earlier. I later found two more lists in the digitized WO 329/3109 which I posted on 06/12/2016.

On 12/12/2016 I posted that I had advised TNA that of the 14 copies I had made from the original SWB Roll 329/3034 at Kew, only 6 appeared in the digitized version on Ancestry.

Brian,

That’s interesting to know where some other unindexed/scanned lists are hidden away. I’ll look through those that I have found since 2018 to see if there are any that might be relevant to you.
