Old Tom Posted 1 March , 2008 Share Posted 1 March , 2008 Hello, I have just re-read Gary Sheffield's, in my opinion excellent book, after a gap of 2 or 3 years during which I have read many others dealing with different aspects of the Great War. May I recommend it to those seeking an overview of the war. Old Tom
Len Trim Posted 2 March , 2008 Share Posted 2 March , 2008 An excellent book. Read it and Terraine's 'To Win A War', to get a good overview of the so called 'Last 100 Days' and the part played not only by the British Army, including of course our wonderful colonial troops but by Haig himself. Muerrisch Posted 2 March , 2008 Share Posted 2 March , 2008 It is when tracing the hundred days through the cemeteries laden with the dead of RWF that I become most emotional. These last days achieved so much, but cost so much: many of them conscripts doing their best, led by a very small number of regular officers, officered by Grammar School boys, stiffened by a handful of regulars, some New Army, and the TF. The nearer I get to the final eastern sites, the worse it gets for me. 'My' last boys died on 4th November .... so near and yet so far. RIP.
