Could someone please tell what these numbers mean. I have found many War Graves with for instance 1/11 So and So Regiment. I have helped for some years people to find war graves in my particular area, and if need be provide photo/s of headtsone.

If anyone can tell me what the above really means, I've wondered for years?

Welcome to the forum!

I believe the number refers to their battalion. For example the Oxford and Bucks Light Light Infantry has a 1/1st, 1/4th, 2/1st and a 2/4th battalion to name just a few.

There are two reasons for 'fractions' -

Units of the Territorial Force were organised as 'first line', 'second line' and 'third line'. The first line and often the second line went overseas - hence 1/5 Seaforth would be the first line of the 5th Seaforth, 2/1 Highland Field Ambulance RAMC would be the second line of the 1st Highland Field Ambulance.

The other eason for fractions is the amalgamations of units, usually because both were under strength - this was not confined to the TF - e.g. 6/7th Loamshires.
