Paul Johnson Posted 6 February , 2004 Share Posted 6 February , 2004 John KIRBY - G/3038 - Private - 8th Battalion. East Kent Regiment Killed In Action on the 4th July 1916 aged 35 John was apparently serving as a Battalion Drummer and had been in France since 7th October 1915. He is buried in the Pond Farm Cemetery, Heuvelland, Belgium. I am trying to establish how he was killed. Are there any EKR specialists who can tell what action the unit were involved in on this day? Thank You PAUL JOHNSON
Jonathan Saunders Posted 6 February , 2004 Share Posted 6 February , 2004 Paul, Not much in the Buffs history. A detachment of the 8/Buffs carried out a raid on German trenches near Ploegsteert on 28 June ... it was some raid as it involved more than 100 men - apparently only 4 killed (havent checked this on SDGW). The Bttn then seem to have gone into training exercises to the north of Meteren before travelling down to the Somme in July. This looks like a job for the War Diary. If my memory is correct Pond Farm Cemetery wasnt far behind the 1916 Front Line in the south of the Salient.
