In 1916 it was taken over by the 16th (Irish) Division, who held the Loos Salient at the time, and many of their dead were brought back to the cemetery from the front line. Succeeding divisions used the cemetery until October 1918, and men of the same Division, and often the same battalion, were buried side by side. After the Armistice, many isolated graves from the Loos battlefield were brought into the cemetery, including those of 41 men of the 9th Black Watch. There are now 1,996 Commonwealth burials of the First World War in the cemetery, 277 of them unidentified. SDGW has him born Smallthorne Staffs, if my geography is correct the distance apart is within a mile so I would say it was the same person. Patricks Family- 8 Malkin Street Hanley Staffordshire Father-William Riley age 41 Iron Stone Washer born Ireland Mother-Mary Riley age 31 born in Ireland Brother-William Riley age 10 born Burslem Staffs Sisters-Louisa Riley age 6 born Burslem Staffs Florence Riley age 1 born Burslem Staffs. I checked CWGC & SDGW for Patricks brother William, he to was a casualty of the war,CWGC entry gives NOK as William & Mary Riley Details- Connaught Rangers 1st Btn William Riley Pte 5725 Born,Enlisted and Residence-Burslem Staffs Died-18/4/16 Mesopotamia.
